Dear Representative (Last Name),
On behalf of The Best Library’s Board of Trustees, I’m writing to introduce myself as the board’s chairperson and to briefly describe the positive impact the public library in (place name) has on your constituents. While libraries are noted for offering materials for reading and research in a variety of formats, our library also serves as a key access point in our community for the Internet and offers a wide-range of learning experiences for all ages.
Last year, we reached 20,906 individuals through quality programs for children, teens, and adults. The library counted 56,349 wired internet sessions and 20,901 uses of the wireless network. We had a total of 257,341 visitors to the library and our customers collectively checked out a total of 594,545 physical items- books, CDs, and DVDs, and electronic resources including e-books. We’ve found that people need and use the library to re-tool for career changes, participate in e-government, introduce their children to an enhanced learning environment, explore new technologies and enrich their personal and professional lives through information and literature. Our collections, programs, services and staff help them to accomplish their tasks and fulfill their goals.
While our statistics are impressive, I want to share one story which illustrates how the library is
making a difference in the lives of the people in our community:
The son of one of our regular library patrons was distraught when he asked to speak with our director last Fall. His mother, a voracious reader, had been diagnosed with macular degeneration, a disease which causes the loss of eyesight over time. She had fallen into a depression, worried that her life would be empty without sight. The library director showed her son our large print book collection and audio book selection and then introduced him to the Talking Books service which provides a digital player and reading materials free of charge to those who are unable to read regular print. He was visibly relieved to learn that his mother would not be without her joy of reading as her eyesight worsened.
Our library transforms the lives of the people who live here.
We would love to have you visit the library to enjoy an event or to simply tour the facility so we can show you in person what we have to offer. If you have any questions about libraries in general then please don’t hesitate to contact me or our library director, (name), at the library. It would be our pleasure to assist you.
