Technology Tapas - SMS Reference Service: A New Point of Need for Libraries - Margie Ruppel and Amy Vecchione - Room 201

Boise State University’s text reference service is growing in popularity among students. BSU librarians chose SMS software and started the service during Summer 2010.  Join BSU librarians Amy Vecchione and Margie Ruppel for this session to learn what types of questions are asked through SMS, students’ opinions of the service, as well as helpful guidelines for starting your own text referencing service.

Margie Ruppel is a reference and instruction librarian at Boise State University, and is the liaison to the College of Eductaion. Her research interests are online reference and instruction. She graduated from ndiana University with her MLS in 2000. In her spare time, Margie enjoys hiking, biking, and reading young adult literature.

Amy Vecchione is a reference and instruction librarian at Albertsons Library at Boise State University. She has worked on statewide digitization projects, served on the Executive Board of the Idaho Library Association. Amy also harnesses mobile technologies in her teaching and work as a librarian. She is passionate about connecting users to the information that they need.

Book Bites - Terrific Teens: How to Build Community in a High School Library - Gena Marker - Room 105

Gena and her LABbies will present on the various events, activities and initiatives implemented this year at the Centennial High School Library.

Gena Marker is the teacher-librarian at Centennial High School, where she has the distinct privilege of working with the “LABbies” – students who are members of the Library Advisory Board, a group of energetic, creative students who plan and execute all the lunchtime chaos @ the library.

Networking Nibbles - Job searching panel - Kelsey Keyes - Room 106

This panel will discuss a variety of topics surrounding searching for a job as a librarian, interviewing and planning a presentation, hiring and being on a search committee.

  • Kelsey Keyes is the Assistant Librarian at the College of Idaho. She graduated from library school at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. She got her M.A. in English Literature from UIUC. As a recent graduate, she has recent experience with job searching and interviewing.
  • Jillian Subach is the manager of the Collister Branch of Boise Public Library. She has been working as a public librarian for 13 years, serving in almost every capacity possible (reference, teen and children's librarian, head of programming, etc). Jillian served ILA as the Chair of Advocacy/ PR and the Legislative Co-Chair at various times since 2004. In her free time, Jillian enjoys cooking, reading, traveling, watching F1, and trying to be a skier.
  • Lindsay Wyatt is the E-Resources and Business Librarian at the Boise Public Library. She holds an MLIS from the University of Arizona and has experience working in a wide variety of libraries, from museum to law to academic, but she is a public librarian at heart. Her interests are marketing, public relations, leadership and business research. When she's not at BPL, you can find her hiking with her dog, drinking coffee or reading DIY and design blogs.

Community Kitchen - El Dia Delicioso!- Erica Compton - Room 107

Reach out to your Spanish speaking families on this special day celebrating children and books. This session will provide you with recipes for cooking up inviting El Día activities. A collection of the latest bilingual and Spanish children’s books will also be served up for your enjoyment. Let’s have a fiesta!

Erica Compton has been a Project Coordinator with ICFL since February 2010. She has her degree in Elementary Education with certification in Special Education and spent 12 years teaching in non- traditional settings – severely emotionally disturbed, gifted, after-school science and engineering centers.
