Curious to identify an ancient log structure near the lower end of the Champagne Creek valley, James McGill quickly broadened his interest and uncovered a "story of mystery and human interest" about the early settlers of this area. Utilizing previously explored old documents and records, the authors provide a significant contribution to the written history of Butte County. Idaho authors.

Rosemary Palmer attempts to rectify this weakness in the historical perspective with a narrative that examines exclusively the child's viewpoint on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails from 1841 to the 1869 completion of the transcontinental railroad. The author analyzes diaries, letters, journals, and written reminiscences as well as oral histories collected by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). What the reader discovers is a unique view of life on the trail. Impressions of landscape, parents, food, religion, disease, and friends as well as enemies are just some of the topics covered in this narrative. Palmer includes an intriguing chapter entitled "What Young Pioneers Did and Did Not Say." Rosemary Palmer is Assistant Professor, Department of Elementary Education and Specialized Studies, College of Education, at Boise State University.

The story of Peter Skene Ogden and his fur-gathering expedition of 1824-25 in the Snake River country of Idaho. John Reid offers a different approach to the narrative in that he analyzes the event from a legal perspective. What impact did the rule of law have on the conflict and its resolution among American and British fur traders, and was there a common acceptance by both parties of certain legal parameters in their competition with each other? This volume seeks to answer these questions and, in so doing, to provide insight into Anglo-American interaction in the Pacific Northwest frontier. Idaho author.

Rodgers and Kullman, however, seek to put this danger into its proper perspective through their scholarly analysis of homegrown extremism. The authors, in a highly informative volume, provide definitions and historical insight into their subject and offer mini case studies of particular terrorist incidents as well as profiles of groups and their leaders. As part of this latter aspect is a discussion of certain individuals associated with the Western region, such as Richard Butler of Idaho and John Trochmann of Montana. The book concludes with a review of governmental reactions to these domestic activities and the authors’ suggestions for  future responses. Each chapter has a list of possible discussion questions.

Smith, Don Ian. Symon's Daughter: A Memoir of Elizabeth Symon Smith. [Rev. ed.] Rancho Murieta, CA: Bridge House Books, 2002.

430 p.: ill., maps, ports.; 23 cm. ISBN 0965348784. OCLC 51158439. "A memoir of Elizabeth Symon Smith" from birth in Scotland to teaching in Utah and farming in Idaho. Don Ian Smith, a retired Methodist minister and rancher in Salmon, has written this book as a very personal tribute to “Libby” Smith, the woman he lovingly calls “a wonderful mother.” Born in Scotland, Elizabeth Smith was orphaned at age 11 but, as a teenager, was able to obtain her teaching credentials. In1905 at the age of 18, she immigrated alone to Granite, Utah, to take a teaching position. From that point, the author traces for his readers the story of his mother’s life until her death in 1974. Most of this biography unfolds in southern Idaho where she settled with her husband and six children. It is obvious that Smith sees his mother as an inspiration which is clearly reflected in the successful and fulfilling lives of her children. Idaho author.

xx, 277 p.: ill.; 25 cm. ISBN 0767907590. OCLC 49528066. Includes bibliographical references and index. This is the story of Philo T. Farnsworth, boy genius and inventor of the television, and David Sarnoff, mogul and founder of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). Daniel Stashower, a free-lance journalist and mystery author, chronicles the conflict between these two individuals for the right to control the future of television technology and any resulting financial rewards. One would be victorious, while the other would become virtually forgotten. Farnsworth first sketched a diagram of the early television in 1921 at the age of fourteen. By 1927, he had invented the first television image and acquired a patent for his invention. This was only the beginning of the drama, however; he then faced the corporate world in the person of Sarnoff. The story of this confrontation is the focus of this book. Originally published in 1995 under the title Every Knee Shall Bow, the present volume is an updated and revised edition which explores the events surrounding the violent and tragic confrontation between Randy Weaver and the federal government in rural Idaho in 1992. Jess Walter is a career journalist and spent over three years reporting on Ruby Ridge for Spokane’s Spokesman-Review newspaper. The author, however, has not relied merely on his journalistic skills to compile this account but has utilized official documents, letters, and hundreds of interviews. The end result is an attempt to provide a balanced chronicle of what still remains a controversial and much-debated episode in United States history. As a sidelight, the Spokesman-Review received a Pulitzer Prize nomination for its coverage of the events of Ruby Ridge, much of which can be attributed to Walter’s reporting.

The late Merle Wells, former Archivist and State Historian of Idaho, originally published this material in 1963 as part of the bulletin series of the then Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology (now the Idaho Geological Survey). The present volume is an updated edition. Heavily illustrated with period photographs as well as extensive maps, Gold Camps & Silver Cities is not just a story of mining and its economic impact on Idaho from 1862 to 1900; it is also a snapshot of social life during this time. Wells interprets early mining experience in Idaho as an antecedent to the growth of farming, ranching, and transportation, without which "nothing resembling Idaho would have been likely to materialize."
