The Idaho Library Association is proud to announce the winner of the 2002 Book Award.  The purpose of the award is to recognize and honor one book, selected from among all the books published in any one calendar year, which has made an outstanding contribution to the body of materials about Idaho.  The award is intended to encourage the writing and publishing of books about Idaho, and to encourage excellence in writing and high standards of accuracy and readability in those books.

The prize for 2002 Book of the Year is awarded to a book illustrating the Magic Valley’s flourishing past, The Secrets of the Magic Valley and Hagerman’s Remarkable Horse, edited by Todd Shallat and Kathryn Baxter, Black Canyon Communications.  This is an outstanding book filled with fascinating information and stunning pictures.

Honorable Mention was awarded to William Gruber’s On All Sides Nowhere: Building a Life in Rural Idaho, published by Houghton Mifflin Company.  This book is a pleasure to read.

Special recognition for his contribution to the literature of Idaho was awarded posthumously to the poet and teacher, Ford Swetnam.  His titles include:  Offer the Cup to a Friend, Limberlost Press, Another Tough Hop, Walrus and Carpenter Books, and Ghostholders Know, Blue Scarab Press.
