 Future Special Issue:

Hoping for the Best,

Preparing for the Worst:

The Importance of Disaster Preparedness

It can happen to any of us, at any time:  fire, flood, leaky roof, broken pipe in the ceiling, insect infestation, earthquake, war.  Any disaster known to the human race can have its detrimental effect on a library.  However, it is quite possible for us to be prepared for such disasters, to some extent; by being educated and having a plan for dealing with various kinds of crises, much of the potential damage and confusion can be avoided. Careful planning is not possible during an emergency, and writing a disaster response plan in advance, when those involved can calmly determine what the potential for disaster might be, what the responses to each kind of crisis should be, who ought to be involved, and what the repercussions for each action might be, is a very important task.  When disaster does strike, the plan will guide the main players and assist in directing volunteers as well.  It can save a great deal of time and assure that the proper steps are taken for salvage and recovery of library materials.

A special issue of the Idaho Librarian will be published in Feb. 2004 to address the topic of Disaster Preparedness.  We will include true stories of how some libraries in Idaho have dealt with various unexpected events, and provide information about how each of us can become more aware of the issues and make our own disaster plans.  A bibliography of resources on the topic will also be part of the issue.

Has your library experienced fire, flood, or other disaster?  We would like to hear from you.  Any information you can share with your colleagues can be very helpful!  Has your library taken the time to create a disaster preparedness plan?  If so, would you consider sharing it with other libraries in Idaho?  Please contact Kristi at (208) 282-4073 or austkris@isu.edu if you are able to share information or anecdotes on this topic.
