1999 ILA ANNUAL CONFERENCE PREVIEW

Join us for the 1999 ILA Annual Conference at the Boise Doubletree Riverside, October 6-9. A full line-up of programs, workshops and meetings support the theme Libraries Today: Virtual, Vital, Valuable.

We have two all day pre-conferences on October 6:

Lisa F. Kinney, author of Lobby for Your Library: Know What Works (ALA, 1992) will present a program on effective techniques for influencing legislators, boards, and councils. She's a librarian, practicing attorney, and former state legislator from Wyoming.

The OCLC/WLN Pacific Northwest Service Center will cover in-depth the services and products from the new, merged organization.

The programs on October 7-8 cover a wide variety of interesting topics.

Programs for the Virtual Library:

· Learn how to use medical databases on the Internet, and how to teach the public to find and use medical information.
· Locate maps and statistical data about Idaho in cyberspace.
· Get training in the Lili databases from their vendors.
· Acquire techniques for the management of electronic resources.
· Equip your library with adaptive computer technologies for the under-served.
· Discover what policies and procedures you need to deal with "Virtual Naked People".

It's not just "high tech"; it's also "high touch":

· Find out how to deal with difficult people.
· Formulate successful library service programs for at-risk families.
· Prepare your library for the Accelerated Reader Program.
· Teach literacy skills to preschoolers at story time.
· Discover Hispanic life in Idaho.
· Delve into the history of "Gay Life" in Boise.

Have fun, too:

· Greet old friends at the conference reception!
· Dine to the music of George Gershwin!
· Break your bank account at the ever-lively Intellectual Freedom Auction!

The conference mailing will be out in August.

Ron Force
1st Vice-President

PUBLIC LIBRARY DIVISION

Among the presentations at the ILA annual conference this fall will be one called "Virtual Naked People II." Along with Fred Belzer, who is a Pocatello attorney and library trustee, I'll be presenting this program about legal issues connected to public Internet access in libraries. In addition to working with policy issues as a library board member, Fred attended ALA's "Lawyers for Libraries" institute on Internet access and First Amendment issues.

So far, the laws which Congress has passed to mandate filtering of public Internet workstations have not withstood legal challenges. More laws are on the way at the federal level, however, and some states have already passed laws limiting Internet access. In addition, there have been several lawsuits about Internet filtering in public libraries, including the one in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Idaho librarians are concerned about public Internet access for a variety of reasons, including matters of equity, and patron instruction and guidance. We face challenges in the costs of Internet access, too—especially ongoing maintenance costs. There will be much to learn from programs and networking at the ILA conference. If you're interested in law and policy on public Internet access in libraries, you'll want to attend "Virtual Naked People II."

Internet access isn't the only interest of public librarians, of course. There will be much more of interest at the ILA annual conference, including the Public Library Division meeting, where we can adopt some by-laws!

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Titles Challenged at Nampa Public Library

At a board meeting July 8, the Nampa Public Library's board reaffirmed the staff's decision to keep Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy's Roommate in the juvenile non-fiction section, rather than restrict access to the two titles. The library had transferred the books from the children's picture-book area after several residents expressed alarm.

"Public libraries are supported by and serve all people in the community," Assistant Director Camille Wood told reporters. "We don't limit our selection to the view of one community section."

Despite the board's decision, community members concerned about the books are not satisfied with the library's actions. The issue was still unresolved at press time.

Banned Books Week Sept. 25-Oct. 2

Our Constitution protects the rights of all individuals to open access to information. Celebrating Banned Books Week: Free People Read Freely, September 25 through October 2, 1999, will teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature and will draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.

This year's graphics and other information on Banned Books Week 1999 can be found at:

Update on University of Arizona SLIS

Carla Stoffle, Dean of the University of Arizona Libraries, has agreed to serve as Acting Director of the University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Sciences. Dean Stoffle's primary mission is to regain accreditation and to continue to offer a strong educational experience that prepares students for librarianship in the 21st century.

The Dean's information gathering process has been and will continue to be extensive. She has contacted library leaders as well as alumni and other university colleagues. She is also in the process of distributing a survey to former students.

The current challenge for the University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Science will require insight and information. Please help Dean Stoffle by providing your library's experiences or your experiences as a library student. National Library Week 2000 to focus on kids, the arts

Libraries across the country are invited to join in hosting a "Connect for Kids" Day on Saturday, April 8, to kick off National Library Week 2000 (April 9-15). The national event will highlight the variety of resources available to kids and their families at the library and in their community.

The American Library Association (ALA) will sponsor the day in cooperation with the Benton Foundation, sponsor of a "Connect for Kids" Web site (http://www.connectforkids.org) and campaign to raise public awareness about how to make the world a better place for kids, starting at the library. Libraries will receive a poster/tip sheet in fall 1999 with ideas for developing "Connect for Kids" Day programs and publicity.

ALA will also join the National Endowment for the Arts, the Library of Congress Center for the Book and other organizations to sponsor LIVE at the Library 2000, a yearlong millennium celebration of the arts. Grants will be awarded to 500 libraries, representing every state, to develop partnerships and host programs during National Library Week and throughout the year with writers, actors, musicians and other artists. Applications for grant funds will be posted in fall 1999 on the ALA Web site at http://www.ala.org/publicprograms.

The theme for National Library Week will be "Read! Learn! Connect! @ the Library." U.S. libraries of all types are eligible to apply for a $4,000 National Library Week Grant sponsored by the Grolier Publishing Company for the best library promotion tied to the goals and theme of National Library Week. The deadline for application is October 15, 1999. The winner will be notified in December. A grant application can be found on the ALA Web site at http://www.ala.org/pio/grolierapp.html.

A free tip sheet from ALA and the Library of Congress with ideas for National Library Week, the Bicentennial of the Library of Congress (April 24, 2000) and other promotional opportunities is available from the ALA Public Information Office, 50 East Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611. Telephone: 800-545-2433, ext. 5044/5041. E-mail: pio@ala.org. The tip sheet and updates will be posted on the ALA Web site at http://www.ala.org/events/promoevents/index.html.

New posters, bookmarks and other promotional materials will be available in the fall ALA Graphics Catalog. To receive a catalog, call 800-545-2433, ext. 5046.

Very Close to Trouble: The Johnny Grant Memoir. Edited by Lyndel Meikle. Pullman, Wash.: Washington State University Press, 1996. 0-87422-139-0

A few years ago I visited the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Deer Lodge, Montana. The well preserved home was filled with the mementos of the Conrad Kohrs family, which had owned and worked the ranch for many years, but Johnny Grant (1831-1907), the first owner, remained in my mind a shadowy figure, gruff and grizzly. However, with this publication of his memoir, Johnny Grant has stepped out of the shadows, and a very likable young man he is.

Park ranger and historian Lyndel Meikle resurrected Grant's memoir. Meikle knew of the twelve pages of reminiscences attributed to Grant that in 1952 had been given by William Nutt, a grandson of Johnny Grant, to Con Warren, a grandson of Conrad Kohrs. Meikle realized that a full manuscript might well exist somewhere and she was determined to find it. Her search for Grant's memoir prompted her to send letters of inquiry to everyone she could locate in Alberta having the surname of Nutt, but it took several years for Meikle, who had been researching Grant since 1983, to finally obtain William Nutt's typed transcript of Grant's memoir. Eventually Meikle located Clothild Bruneau Grant's original handwritten manuscript. Johnny Grant had dictated his memoirs to his wife Clothild during the last two years of his life, and his memory of incidents and details is extraordinary.

Although the original manuscript covers Grant's entire life, from his comfortable childhood in Three Rivers, Quebec, to his mature years in the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, it is the portion that spans the years 1847-1867, when he lived in what is now part of Idaho and Montana, that is included in this publication. Grant's mother died when he was eighteen months old. His father Richard Grant, a Hudson's Bay trader, brought his four young children, William, Richard, Johnny, and Jane, to live with his mother in Three Rivers, Quebec. This book picks up the narrative at the point when sixteen-year-old Johnny and his older brother Richard joined their father, who was stationed at the Hudson Bay Company's Fort Hall, near present day Pocatello, Idaho.

Insecure and awkward in his relationship to the father he hardly knew, Johnny Grant progressed from inexperienced youth to adept frontiersman and self-sufficient trader. He traded with the Indians and with the immigrants on the Oregon Trail. Gradually, he built up large herds of cattle and horses. Living among the reckless men and desperadoes of the West, Grant also was one to enjoy a little gambling and horse racing. An honest businessman himself, Grant was often too trusting of others. Both his vices and his trusting nature brought Grant several times "very close to trouble." Nevertheless, Grant accumulated a degree of wealth, a large family of Indian wives and children, and a reputation for hospitality. Having settled in the Deer Lodge valley, he eventually had a substantial house built in 1862 in Cottonwood (now the town of Deer Lodge, Montana).

Grant recounts his life with an easy and unaffected style, making his memoir a pleasure to read. His easy going nature will appeal to the leisure reader, who will enjoy this candid picture of frontier life, while his firsthand accounts of this period in Western history will attract the historian. Grant's observations and experiences cover the Hudson's Bay Company, Indians, Mormons, immigrants on the Oregon Trail, cattle ranching, and the road agents and vigilantes of Montana.

Johnny Grant sold his ranch to Conrad Kohrs in 1867 and brought his children to the Red River district of Manitoba where he still had family and friends. This volume includes Grant's reminiscences up through his move to Manitoba and his description of the area and its inhabitants. The unpublished portion of Grant's memoir that covers his years in Canada will tantalize students of Canadian history, and of the Metis who lived there. They will want the remainder of this memoir to be published.

Grant's short chapters read quickly and are enriched by Meikle's endnotes. These notes supply historical context, provide additional facts and details, and correlate Grant's narrative of events with excerpts from other contemporary accounts, such as Conrad Kohrs' autobiography and Granville Stuart's Forty Years on the Frontier. A short selective bibliography of primary and secondary sources and an index that references the endnotes as well as the main text are included. Enjoyable and informative, this edition of Johnny Grant's memoirs would be appropriate for public, high school, academic, and historical society libraries.
