ELA appointed a fact-finding committee to look into status of school
library programs.
April 1991
IEA Delegate Assembly directed the IEA Board of Directors to develop
an advocacy plan for school libraries.
Oct. 2, 1991 School Library Improvement Coalition first meeting.
Jan. 31, 1992 Idaho School Library Media Program Coalition executive committee.
Feb.19,1992 List of correspondence indicating activity.
Feb.24,1992 Letter from Jerry Evans stating that he couldn't give a letter of support.
Mar. 24, 1992 Letters from Executive Boards
of IAESP and IASA saying
they would continue to send representatives to the meetings, but would
not
officially endorse the coalition.
April 1992 Coalition
members attended hearings of Steering and Evaluations
Committee of SBE to discuss role of school libraries.
April 30, 1992 Made presentation to Elementary
Approval Process Committee.
Response was not positive.
May 15, 1992 Sent letters to professional organizations
around the state offering
to make presentations at their conferences.
June 26, 1992 Presentation to SBE in Lewiston
to inform them of the status of school libraries in Idaho.
Receive enthusiastic support from Board member, Coleen Mahoney,
who will push for a rule change in September.
Sept. 1992 State
Board requested that a broader base of interest groups be formed
by the SDE to study the issue of elementary school libraries.

attorney suggesting that many school
districts are in violation of Idaho Code 33-1201
Aug. 6, 1997 Follow-up to letter asking for a response.
Oct. 8, 1997 Third letter to State Board (new counsel)
Oct 28, 1997 Response from SBE counsel
stating that while it was true that not all schools
had certificated librarians, any that were hired in the capacity of librarians
were certificated.
Mar. 5, 1998 Carolyn Mauer developed
a School Library Information sheet.
Began formal and informal dialogue and meetings resulting in this meeting.
Oct. 27, 1998 Memo from IEA attorney stating case law, etc. in support of our claim of violation of State Code.
